ABOUT US

Four years after the city of Sonora, Texas was founded in 1889, a Methodist Church was built.  In 1926 during the "Sheep Era", the current sanctuary was built followed by the Education Building after WWII in 1955.  Through boom and bust, the First United Methodist Church of Sonora has held out the light of Christ giving hope, faith, and love to our community.

OUR VISION

Our purpose is to be a means of grace to our members and our community.

WHAT WE DO

We support families and children as they grow closer to God in Christ through grace.

OUR COMMUNITY

SMALL TOWN - BIG HEART

The First United Methodist Church is proud to be an active member in Sonora and Sutton County.  We work with the other area churches for our shared community.  From shared youth groups to supporting our schools and the Fellowship of Christian Students, we actively seek to support everyone in our area.

Joe David Ross Remembers

On the fifth Sunday of October in 2022, Joe David Ross shares his memories of the church and Sonora, Texas with members during a potluck luncheon.  Filled with personal stories and stories of the long term families of Sonora, this 50 minute video is a walk down memory lane and a challenge to build new memories today.

Edith May Babcock was an adventurous, independent minded woman, raised in the small West Texas town of Sonora in 1926.  She was a long time member of Sonora FUMC and recently passed.  She chronicled and journaled her life story; childhood, falling in love and marrying, living abroad, and raising her young family in 1950’s South Africa and 1960’s South America, then suddenly becoming a single woman in the early 1970’s. She rejoined the workforce, believed in women’s rights, ran marathons, and respected people of all races from every part of the world. Always ready for the next globe-trotting experience, even into her nineties, her motto was, “I’ll go anywhere, anytime!” Her story will be an inspiration, for she was stronger than most people knew.  For more of her life go to EdithMayBabcock.com.
